Super-Plank! Carbon Fiber reinforced stability with a low profile!

Ancientwood developed Super Planks for the underside of our Ancient Kauri tables that needed additional stability to the added tabletop, but with a discrete and subtle design. Especially useful when a table base design that will not allow for a more visible structure to be used.

With help from our friends that have been designing for the America’s Cup sailing yachts, and other Carbon Fiber based structural solutions, we developed the Super Plank!

Ancientwood respects the age and longevity of the wood we work with, and have always looked to have the beauty of our Ancient Kauri to last far beyond our time here on this planet, building for the aesthetic to last not just for today, but hundreds of years from today, as well.

These planks provide a series of “tubes” that run down the length of a table top, and across the width, as well. The tubes are made with domestic Hard Maple strips wrapped in Carbon Fiber. The planks are then fastened directly to the bottom of the slab, usually quite invisible when the table is viewed from most normal height perspectives. There is a built-in allowance for normal expansion and contraction of the natural tabletop, at the same time holding the tabletop flat.

To take this a step further, with the use of threaded inserts inlaid into the bottom of the tabletop and finely threaded bolts, we can actually use these Super Planks to “tune” a wild slab to be flat.
