The story of the Ancient Kauri Bowls

There is a very limited supply of these bowls and this is the only opportunity you will ever have to acquire anything like these – a true one-of-a-kind offer! And of course, when they are gone they will not be replaced. In our twenty years in the business of Ancient Kauri, we have never seen anything like this before.

The bowls are currently considered to be “in the rough”, which is the first step in creating the perfect Ancient Kauri bowl. Each bowl has had its initial turning on the lathe, each bowl has been turned to a preliminary overly-thick size, from there it was placed into a moisture-controlled room to complete it’s drying.

These bowls have been curing for ten years and they are now ready for their final turn on the lathe and most of them have the early turning date right on them. They are completely dry and un-stressed. When the final turning takes place, your shape will hold true.

Some of the bowls have checks and cracks in them from the curing process. These are easily filled for structural or aesthetic reasons. In our still-photos we have tried to show the areas that may need attention, showing clearly and detailing any issues up front that may exist in these pieces.

These bowl blanks were selected by the world-class Master wood turner who was in permanent residence at the very source of the Ancient Kauri wood in New Zealand. The sawmills, the  tools, the processing yard, and workshops where this wood was originally worked are now disbanded and blown to the wind. This fact alone illustrates how incredibly rare and valuable these pieces are, and insures an offering like this will never be seen again.

Due to the eye of the original woodturner and his being “front and center” during the cutting and processing of the recovered Ancient Kauri logs, the grain in these pieces is nothing less then the Best-of-the-Best.

While these bowls were created with re-turning in mind, many of them are singularly beautiful. They can certainly can stand on their own exactly as they are today. They don’t always require additional shaping to show the unique beauty and depth of the amazing Ancient Kauri wood grain. If the current textures are appealing to you just as they are, you are not alone! Ancientwood can do a light cleaning for you, so they can be shown in their current raw beauty.
